The Story Behind This Recipe

In Japan, there’s a unique food culture where meals are decorated in cute and creative ways—like kyaraben (character bento boxes shaped like animals or popular characters) and deco sweets (decorated desserts).

These are often made for children, as a way for parents to show love and care—hoping to make mealtime more fun and even help their kids enjoy foods they might not usually like.

Food like this also encourages lots of communication at the table. And in today’s social media era, the visually appealing nature of these meals has helped the trend spread even further.

While everyday home cooking typically focuses on nutrition and taste, adding a touch of playfulness once in a while might just make your cooking experience even more enjoyable!

Use small cutters to cut shapes from the sliced cheese and nori for the bear’s facial features and decorations.
4
instructions
instructions
Lightly oil a frying pan, pour in one beaten egg seasoned with a pinch of salt, and cook a thin omelet. Fold it into a rectangular pillow shape and place it on the plate.
5
instructions
Assemble the rice parts to form a bear, placing its head on the egg pillow and arranging the other parts around it.
6
instructions
Lightly oil the pan and add the butter. In a bowl, beat 3 eggs with milk (or soy milk, plant-based milk, cream, or water) and a pinch of salt.
If you prefer, you can also make the omelet in the modern fluffy style. For details, check out our recipe: Japanese Omurice 2 Ways: Classic and Modern Fluffy Style.

Tip1
Since butter contains milk solids like protein, it burns easily. Adding a bit of vegetable oil helps stabilize the temperature and prevents burning.

Tip2
Adding a small amount of liquid raises the coagulation temperature of the eggs, allowing for gentler cooking and a fluffier texture. Soy milk, plant-based milk, or cream also add richness, but water works too and can make the texture smoother.

Tip3
When mixing the eggs, avoid whisking too vigorously. Instead, gently break up the egg whites. If the whites remain intact, the cooked eggs may have uneven white streaks.
7
instructions
Pour the egg mixture into the pan. While gently shaking the pan back and forth, stir continuously, drawing the set edges toward the center to help the eggs cook evenly.
8
instructions
Once the eggs reach a soft scrambled consistency, turn off the heat. Gently place the fluffy eggs over the bear like a cozy blanket.
9
instructions
Decorate the omelet blanket with flower-shaped ham cutouts and sprinkle with parsley if desired.
